YOUR CLIENTS NEED YOUR VOICE.
Many doulas have been told that it is not their role to "speak for their clients," but that they should rather teach their clients to "advocate for themselves." We're going to show you the ethical and legal reasons that this is wrong, and help you understand the lawĀ of informed consent, the process of informed consent, and your role as a doula in upholding patient rights.
Imagine how it would feel to know exactly what to say!
Ā
We'll show you:
-
How to ground yourself as an advocate
-
Several foundational advocacy tools that uphold your clients' right to choose
-
How to speak up professionally, and in a way that increases the humanity of the birth room
Ā
Can't make it live?Ā We highly recommend you change your plans to be here in person! But if you can't, no worries! Register anyway, and you'll have a few days after class to enjoy the free recording.
MEET YOUR GUIDES
Meredith Nelson & Alicia Fishbein are board-certified patient advocates, seasoned doulas, and the founders of Intentional Birth, and of the Perinatal Patient Advocacy Center.
When they attended their original doula trainings, they were taught not to speak up. Don't rock the boat. Smile and nod at care providers. Then they started attending births ā and watched their clients walk away feeling powerless and traumatized, and providers also were carrying a heavy load.
They knew there was a bigger role to play.
More than a dozen years later, they've developed confidence-building strategies, detailed systems for preparing clients, and a complete system of communication and advocacy tools that humanizes the whole team.
They've trained hundreds of birth workers and supported hundreds of families using these exact methods.
Now they want to share it with you.
"I got home from my Birth last night that was incredibly challenging. It required me to use every skill Iāve learned over the years, but Iām feeling most grateful for the skills I learned at the Intentional Birth Advocacy Training recently. Iām not sure how the last few days would have gone if I didnāt have those tools and skills to use with my client and the medical team. I felt like I was able to communicate with everyone in a way that I really never have before. At the end of this Birth, the CNM and OBĀ both said they were so grateful I was there and they wish I could be on their floor every day. This was really a product of utilizing what Iāve learned in this advocacy training, and Iām just feeling really grateful for what Iāve learned and the confidence Iāve built because of it. "

DISCOVER WHAT IS POSSIBLEĀ
You got into this work because you believe families deserve better. You've seen what happens when a family feels supported, informed, and respected ā and you've seen what happens when they don't.
In the words one of our trainees, Julia Shirin, "I am finally finding my voice. I just needed the words."
